While up to four per cent of the population is thought to be affected by food allergies, Canadians are aware of peanut allergies, which have doubled in North American children over the past decade – whether it's a friend, family member or classmate that may be allergic.
"At Anaphylaxis Canada, we're focused on educating families about how to understand and read food labels to ensure that products are safe for them," said Laurie Harada, executive director, Anaphylaxis Canada. "We appreciate companies such as Hershey offering more snack choices for peanut allergic consumers,"

Keeping a facility peanut free involves more than simply cutting them out of the ingredients. At the Twizzler facilities, for example, several practices and audits have been put in place to ensure that no peanuts will enter the facility. This includes regular audits of suppliers to ensure they are peanut free, employee training, visitor protocols and regular manufacturing audits.

"Putting the peanut free logo on our Twizzler products is a promise that we make to anyone who enjoys our candy," says Sandra Brzezinski, group brand manager, Twizzler products. "We've dedicated time and resources to keeping the facilities peanut free and delivering on that promise. It is also important for parents and children to always remember to read the package closely to ensure products they are purchasing and consuming are peanut free."
